Car Safety Tips: Seat Belts Are Important

Statistics reveal that people who suffered severe injuries during a car crash are those who did not wear their seat belts. There is really a point in saying that "80% of all death to children in a motor vehicle accident could be prevented by properly securing the safety harnesses and seatbelts." Anything that keeps you from being ejected, hitting something inside the vehicle or having something hit you will significantly increase your chances of surviving a crash and that is what seat belts is all about.

If you want to have a safer ride for you and your family at all times, follow these car safety tips:

• Buckle your seat belt. Make sure that the latch clicks are placed firmly.
• Adjust the lap belt so that it fits tightly across your hips and make sure the shoulder belt fits tightly across your chest and over your shoulder.
• Don’t wear your shoulder belt under your arm. In case of accident, your upper body will pivot forward and your head will strike the vehicle interior. The belt will press into your abdomen and likely cause serious or even fatal injuries to internal organs.
• Always try to place the lap belt below the bottom edge or fold of a winter jacket or below the lowest part of your belly if you’re wearing bulky winter clothing or large body types which can pose a particular risk, so that it sits closer to the lap than to the belly button.
