How To Flush Your Engine Cooling System

Flushing your engine cooling system every two years is very important for a number of reasons. It will guarantee maximum protection for your engine from the anti-freeze. If you neglect your cooling system, it can lead to engine and transmissions failure. If you don't want to bring your car to a garage for costly repairs, follow these simple steps to flush your engine cooling system yourself.

• Always start with the engine cold and ignition off. Find the radiator cap located near the front of your vehicle's engine and loosen the radiator plug found on the radiator's backside. This allows the coolant to drain. Place a pan underneath to catch the liquid.
• Remove the radiator pressure cap and thermostat. Switch on the engine and place a garden hose into your coolant line. Make a slow, continuous flow of water into your engine while coolant runs out from underneath.
• Make sure that your temperature gauge doesn't go too high. Running the heat on high opens the heater core and gets the coolant flowing.
• Turn off your engine and the hose when the coolant is just about clear. Allow the remaining coolant to run off the bottom of the radiator plug before blowing compressed air through the line to clear any water from the line.
• Tighten the radiator plug and repeat the steps to flush the overflow reservoir. Install new 50/50 mixture of water and antifreeze/coolant.
